Tuesday, February 5

Just to let you know i got home safely last night (Tuesday)

Quite a long day...

Awake at 4 a.m. (1 a.m.) annoyingly maybe based around the idea that perhaps i wouldn't wake up in time for the taxi.
4.05 still awake
4.06 ahem..

why is it that with about 10 mins to go before you HAVE to wake up you fall asleep soundly!! lol

Arrived at the airport with no fuss. With some sadness,, Had a cup of coffee (no seriously unless you go to a proper coffee place in Kenya DON'T buy the coffee! drink soda. So with some advice from Simon on how to make a nice cup.. i drank 2 of them.. Gil turned up and we chatted for a while.

On getting to the check in desk the lady informed me that my luggage was over the weight. I informed her the plane was half empty and would this really make a difference. Yes she replied I will have to charge you $50. So i informed her i would wear all the ness clothing that would bring the weight down. so opened the case. took out a coat (yup its 35 degrees) and put it on. took out some cd's (these did weigh a bit) and took out my bible (ok this was heavy!) and she was happy at this point. Then sent me to pay another $100 to change my flight. Hurrah.

Feeling a bit naff at this point and slightly rebellious i sat and sat and sat till it was nearly time to fly by the shops... wow how rebellious..

Decided i needed some sweets to suck whilst take off and landing.. Hit the first shop and bought sweets for $4 or 350sch (this is a rip off exchange rate ok) then in the 2nd shop I bought some more coffee with left over money. the coffee bags were $4 each and so he wanted me to be charged 1000 sch. Hmmm. So i bartered with him. its a normal shop but i bartered. NO way was i paying over the odds for coffee!!! lol

Anyhow went through the traditional scanner machines (once as i came in the terminal and once just after check in) then for some reason they wanted to scan a third time... seriously if Ive not been caught the 1st or 2nd what makes you think the 3rd... hmmm well they checked my badges just in case i could kill someone with the pins. lol

On the plane i had 4 seats to myself. so routine was movie 1 (sleuth - Michel caine and Jude law REALLY GOOD) then sleep, then 1st food, movie 2 (The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising - Christopher eccleston. Ok movie) then 2nd food and sleep. Then finally time for a 3rd movie (Super bad - no seriously it was classed as a comedy - perhaps 1 scene was funny - too l ong and very predictable)

Flight was then over apart from the circling of the airport.. nice back to Britain and cueing to get in.

Met up with Jonathon Dolling.  It was good to catch up and eat nachos and drink a beer. hurrah. ta mate...

Then the long coach journey home.. watched an episode of lost season 3.. then picked up by chris from the church and home to bed.. yawn..

Hope you see you all soon.

Monday, February 4

sat and sun 2nd and 3rd Feb.

quite an amazing weekend. in fact sad as its become my last weekend in a week that started badly but now we live in peace.

ok the British news might imply something else. but everywhere i have been this weekend including Kibera slum has been a safe place.

after a Friday which gave me the last chance to put together my teaching and speaking engagements i also had chance to go shopping!

So i drove the 45 min journey to Village Market across Nairobi and visited the Massi Market.  Loads of those gift type things that no one in Kenya would buy but any Muzongo would love to snap up and take home as authentic Kenya.. Lol.. You know how much stuff have you bought in London that is "English"... ha ha..

Anyhow.. I was perhaps the 7th Muzongo in the whole market., Here is where you start to notice how bad tourism has got. They normally are selling loads. but now hardly anything.

Picked up some gifts at a price that i would pay in the UK. So that is quite a lot of money really! But most of the time they started at enormous amounts of cash. 4,000 sch was normally where they started. But you see that's like £25 so no no no.. (they tried to make me buy at a stupid price but i said no no no).

So i made them happy, i felt i was on a learning curve on bartering.. But I got a few gifts..

In the evening Dawn and i hit another Indian restaurant. Lets be honest I've eating some African food and I've eaten Indian food and the Indian stuff has been lovely... slightly more tasty than true Kenyan food. Little chunks of meat with soup and rice and stew. I love it. Tonight a taste of Goan Fish and Ginger Chicken curry's even now send my mouth watering.

Sat I headed into town with my mug of coffee and bible under one arm to go do some training on the first five books of the bible. Loved it. really enjoyed the training and felt that we had all got somewhere with the information that i had. I love doing this kind of thing and here in Kenya feel really quite useful. Sad that in this time of peace that i am experiencing i have to go..

The afternoon came and i was picked up by Dawn after a walk around town. Nairobi is a really fun place to visit the markets on the streets the shops all bustling with people. Even met the "Strange Man" again. This time i spoke a rubbish french and seem to get away with it. lol. I then headed to the dodgy DVD section. Look i really wanted to see Lost season 3 and well i was taking my £1.60 into my own hands. When i got home later i tried it out and i was watching a copy that had been made from the tv.. so public domain.. ahem...

ANYHOW i wasn't attacked or mugged. So come to Nairobi, Its really a great place to visit. Forget about the tv. I mean would you come to England if you simply watched the news about what happens there??

Dawn then took me to the Nairobi National Park to see the animal orphans.. Awh.. i stoked a baby leopard!! and met lions and ostriches, monkeys and warthogs. its was great. Missed the giraffe park though as it was closed when we got there..

This evening we hit the Safari Park Hotel for a meal with a show. Here you paid for a set meal and you get soup (tomato), salad (sure a bunch of lettuce leaves) and a whole bunch of meat cut and served at your table (eh Dom you'd love it). I sat as they bought sausage (nice), pork (nice), lamb (well tasty), beef (just right), ostrich (really nice I had seconds and perhaps thirds of this), camel (like beef but a bit tough), crocodile (hmm it really tastes like fishy chicken - imagine surf and turf in one), spare ribs (bit bony).. at the same time the house band played (sometimes badly) and then at 9 pm the show started. It was like a representation of some of Kenya and different parts of it. All done Hollywood style. a 45 min show that was really great to watch., I loved it. colourful, musical and visually exciting.

Sunday..

We left to go to Kibera, Remember this was one of the slums that had made it to the news as having problems ok. On arrival no gun shots, no men with knives, no tyres on fire. Calm, and more calm. people playing in the street, men hanging around to buy water, women cooking on outdoor stoves, children with made toys in the streets. Hmm its amazing what giving peace a chance works.

In the church we gave more food to the children from the area so at least that this week they could eat.

£20 people will go a long way in the slum... fancying giving this amount once a year? its not helping me but its helping direct with NO admin costs (email me and I'll let you know what to do)

I was speaking in church today, But on arrival I was asked to dedicate a child.. I've baptised someone before but never done a dedication. I then sang a song and afterwards spoke to them.,

Two people decided to be Christians after i spoke. Amazing.

The afternoon I was training again although as the morning was quite tiring I was not really in the mood for a 2 hour lecture on the law of the Jewish people. hurrah.

SO quickly exiting we headed back to Dawns house and that night we'd been invited for a meal with her neighbours upstairs.

It was really tasty and the evening was really good.

Monday.
Today the school have asked me to help cover swimming lessons. Im going to stand around looking like David hasslehoff (or more like Roy chubby brown) and supervise. then in the afternoon im actually in a class with yr 5 covering.. hurrah.

Tonight i shall pack my things and get ready to leave for home tomorrow.

although i still wonder if im leaving as its unsafe for me what about all the other NGO's or Ex Pats or Embassy people hmmm..people over here are quite confused..

Friday, February 1

So its February and we get a whole extra day this month. wow. Have you thought how you gonna spend it??

Im sat at Dawns school out in the sunshine. the buses rolling past and the fumes increasing as the hot day squeezes them back down.

Good ole wireless internet that im taping into.

Had a chat with Dawn's Deputy Head yesterday. Well she popped down to see me. Offered me a weeks work in the school helping on cover. Wow. I'd been helping as you know as a classroom assistant with Yr 3 and obviously people had been talking.

Maybe not mean a lot to people but its nice to feel you are making a difference to others. that people can talk about the stuff you can do and focus on what they see you are able to do.

Don't get me wrong i love sitting in a van in the uk by myself all day (he said as his boss reads this) but i prefer working with people. So maybe the job pages should come out and i pray another job would come by and enable me to get back to people based work..

knock knock..

today, as im now leaving on a flight next Tuesday, im off to village market where the Massy are. gonna pick up some goodies for home and see what i can barter over. Im aiming to be rock hard and keep price low.. (all ive learnt from my boss you see..).

sat im teaching in the morning till 1 pm, then sunday im speaking at the Blue House Church in the Kibera Slum and then finishing my training in the afternoon. Monday I am gonna help with Dawn's school on cover. need to keep busy.

Im unlikely to write another blog until i get home now. So thanks for reading this. I hope you have enjoyed the journey as much as i have. When i get home if you want to meet up to discus the trip or buy me a beer I've a few weeks before im meant to be back at work.. So let me know.

Thank you for all your email and money support as well

Simon.
